On September 18, 2011, Mr. Jeffrey Donnelly, an inspirational teacher, coach, and friend lost his life in a vehicular accident. “Mr. Don” was a teacher who fostered understanding and growth, a coach who went above and beyond to inspire everyone around him – not just the players, and a friend who will never be forgotten. He was an educator at the Mahanoy Area School District for nearly 25 years teaching eager students Technology Education and Shop; a friendly and familiar face to all who passed his classroom door and a role model for many. His love for instruction often traveled beyond his classroom walls and he was an active and enthusiastic sports trainer for the Mahanoy Area School District, and for nearly two decades he coached and mentored young female athletes for the Mahanoy City Girls Softball League (MCGSL). Mr. Donnelly fostered camaraderie and teamwork both in and outside of the classroom and he truly made a great impact on those he encountered. He helped everyone understand and learn better while motivating everyone to greater achievements.

We started this tournament to honor Mr. Don's life and remember his contributions to the community. Mr. Don dedicated his life to the betterment of those around him, and we, along with his family, continue to honor his spirit of service. With the proceeds raised by the tournament from donations, raffles, and tournament team registrations, we have raised more than $31,000 over the past seven years! With this generous outpouring of support we have established the "Jeffrey Donnelly Memorial Award for Athletics," which is awarded to a Mahanoy Area High School and Marian Catholic High School female athlete in her senior year. In addition, we have also made donations to various local organizations in Mr. Don's name.
